The Kenya Project

The Kenya Project

Ellijay FUMC supports The Kenya Project, a 501c3 non-profit organization established to provide educational opportunities to the children of Nakuru, Kenya.  The Kenya Project Board, in partnership with the Utunzi Board of Kenya, built and maintains Mountain Park Academy, an elementary and secondary school which serves 750-800 students from age 3 through 12th grade. The children are provided 2 meals a day at school.  The curriculum includes Christian studies. Additionally, 4 group homes provide housing for 80 orphaned children.  Each home houses 20 children and is overseen by house parents. Support is raised through sponsorship of the children. Sponsorship for a child at Mountain Park Academy is $25.00 a month, while sponsorship for a child in a group home varies, depending on other subsidies.Kenya Project 1 New

Each year The Kenya Project Board sponsors a medical mission trip to tend to the physical needs of the children. Each child receives a physical exam by a team of nurses and doctors. Medical records are maintained and updated each year. The administrative team takes pictures of the children and helps the children write letters to their sponsors. The letters and pictures are sent to the sponsors, and are available for potential new sponsors. The administrative team also updates the children’s developmental and other biological information. Additional team activities are performed taking best advantage of the skill sets of available team members. This year a construction crew made repairs around the school, and a mental health team counseled with children and parents in the group homes. This team also counseled with troubled teen agers.Kenya Project 2 new

Members and/or small groups of Ellijay FUMC currently sponsor 15 children.  Members also go on the medical mission each year. In 2014 2 members served on the mission team; Rachel Tarr on the Administrative team, and Sandy Williams on the Mental Health team. For the past 2 years, we have raised funds to provide an Appreciation Luncheon for the teachers of Mountain Park Academy, to show the appreciation we have for their dedication to the Christian and academic education of the children.
